Salva Kiir Mayardit is a South Sudanese politician and military officer who is currently serving as the President of South Sudan. He was born on September 13, 1951, in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Sudan. Salva Kiir is a member of the Dinka ethnic group and is fluent in both the Dinka and Arabic languages.
Salva Kiir served as the Vice President of Sudan from 2005 until South Sudan gained independence in 2011. He then became the first President of South Sudan and has been leading the country since then. His leadership has been marked by political instability, violence, and economic struggles.
Salva Kiir played a significant role in the movement for South Sudan's independence and was a prominent figure in the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), which fought against the Sudanese government during the Second Sudanese Civil War (1983-2005).
In 2013, Salva Kiir and his former Vice President, Riek Machar, had a falling out, and this led to a civil war that lasted for several years. The conflict resulted in the displacement of millions of people and the deaths of tens of thousands.
Salva Kiir has been criticized for his leadership style, including his authoritarian tendencies and the lack of progress in achieving peace and stability in South Sudan. However, he remains popular among some segments of the population, particularly among the Dinka community.
